Looking for some instant ways to give your apartment a fresh new face? It might be easier than you think. Some fabric, a can of paint, or just some smart changes can help make even the most tired spaces look a little perkier. Even better, there are loads of DIY tutorials out there that can help you finish just about any project, and do it the right way, too. Here, we've collected just a few tiny projects you can tackle this weekend to give your space a much-needed (and deserved, perhaps) makeover.
- New throw pillows. You can give your room a new look and some serous style by making a few new throw pillows. There are numerous styles out there, and most are pretty easy to construct, making it possible for even inexperience sewers and crafters to get in on the pillow actions. Can't sew? No worries, there are throw pillow projects out there for you too, like this one.
- Give your bookcases an update. Whether you're a bibliophile or just want to keep your collectibles organized, bookshelves are an apartment staple. Yet the standard shelving unit can get a bit boring, so spice things up this weekend with a fun and easy project. Paint the back of your shelf or if you're feeling adventurous, wallpaper it in a really cool pattern.
- Create some custom artwork. While it can be helpful to have an artistic touch when creating artwork for your home, there are plenty of projects that just about anyone can do with a little paint, a canvas, and some inspiration. Even better, most won't take more than a few hours, drying time not included of course. You can DIY your own abstract art like that shown here, use some inventive and budget-friendly ways to print and hang art, or bust out a paintbrush and try your hand at creating something unique.
- Make a new headboard. Boring bed getting you down? Give it a lift by creating a new headboard. There are numerous ways you can go about it, some involving reupholstering, others painting the wall, and still others re-purposing old objects as headboards. Use your imagination!
- Build a gallery on your walls. There are few projects easier to complete in a few hours than creating a really interesting and beautiful gallery wall in your apartment. All you need is some great artwork, photos, or even hangable objects, a plan, and some nails to get the project started. Get some step-by-step instruction on the process here.
- Paint an accent wall. If you don't have the time or energy to paint an entire room, then go for one wall for some added impact. Choose a bright or striking color and use it on the wall that's the main focal point of the room (like say, behind your TV).
- Shelf it up! Increase your storage space and give your room a new look by adding some wall shelves. The process is pretty easy if you have the right tools and even those with very limited DIY experience can make it happen. Get some inspiration for your own arrangement here.
- Get creative with your coffee table. There are so many different ways to build or refinish your coffee table, you might have a hard time choosing what you want to do most. Those with access to some heavy-duty tools can build their own rustic version from reclaimed wood but a more apartment-friendly solution is to simply repaint, add a finish, put glass on top, or even decoupage it.
- Customize your curtains. If you want to get curtains that really fit the feeling of your space and give it some added personalization, consider making your own this weekend. If that's not up your alley, you can always take existing curtains and add new finishes like tie backs, edging, or perhaps even a painted design.
- Set up a landing pad. Do you tend to drop all of your stuff right when you come in the door? Help keep your entryway from getting too messy by creating a landing area for yourself. You'll need a space for keys, bags, coats, and mail, so that you can keep it organized and looking stylish.
